The Best And Worst Performing ETFs In April
Patricia Oey, an ETF analyst at Morningstar, recently compiled the funds with the highest net cash inflows and outflows for April. Oey states that, “Investors poured another $12.2 billion into exchange-traded funds in April 2010, bringing total year-to-date net inflows to $19.9 billion. Flows were positive for all asset classes in April, which helped tip all asset classes into the black for the year-to-date period. International equities ETFs attracted the most new assets in April, with more than $5.6 billion in net inflows.”
Leading all other ETFs with the highest cash inflows for April was the Vanguard Emerging Markets Stock ETF (VWO) which saw roughly $1.5B total inflows for April and roughly $4.3B YTD as of April 30th. The Vanguard Emerging Markets Stock ETF seeks to track the performance of the MSCI Emerging Markets index. The fund employs a passively managed investment approach by investing all or substantially all of assets in a representative sample of the common stocks included in the MSCI Emerging Markets index. This index includes approximately 748 common stocks of companies located in emerging markets around the world.
The ETF which saw the largest outflows in April was the SPDR S&P 500 (SPY) which saw roughly $4.6B total outflows for April and just under $15B outflows YTD as of April 30th. The SPDR S&P 500 ETF is a fund that, before expenses, generally corresponds to the price and yield performance of the S&P 500 Index (SPTR).
