The Five Factors Moving Oil Prices This Year (USO, OIL, BNO, OIH, DBO)

January 10th, 2012

Crude prices are fundamentally based on supply and demand. Raise the supply or lower demand, and prices retreat. The opposite also holds true. Oil tankers can take up to one and a half miles to come to a stop, and up to 10 miles to make a u-turn. That’s a long time at the speed of an Read more…

Jason Simpkins: 2011 was an up-and-down year for oil prices, but don’t expect that pattern to repeat in 2012.  In the coming year, the trajectory for oil prices will be far more linear – and it’s pointed up. In fact, we could even see $150 oil by mid-summer. Read more…

A Beginner’s Guide to Investing In Commodities With ETFs

November 17th, 2011

I’ll never forget my first visit as a teenager to the commodity-trading pit of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME). The swirling bright colored jackets, the shouting and rapid hand signals (looked like arm wrestling to me) were captivating and reminded me of past family gatherings. It was also Read more…

A Tipping Scale Still Favors Natural Gas (UNG, GAZ, USO, OIL, OIH)

September 12th, 2011

This past April 21, according to Baker Hughes Inc.’s (NYSE:BHI) weekly rotary rig count, the number of rigs drilling for oil surpassed those drilling for natural gas. Back in May, I wrote an article on the big shift away from drilling for natural gas in favor of oil. At the time, there were 984 rigs drilling for oil. Just a couple of months later, on June 24, the count reached 1,003. That was the first time since Baker Hughes began separating the oil Read more…

July 12th, 2011

Markets opened sharply lower yesterday and really never looked back. Some strong stocks tried to hold higher like Friday but it felt different; they couldn’t absorb the pressure. SPYs tried to hold the 50day moving average “zone” around $131.80-132.10. They took out this area last night and we are set to open about 12-14 handles lower as the Read more…

Market in Shock as Oil Prices Fall

June 30th, 2011

Last week, western nations, through the International Energy Agency, announced the impending release of the largest amount of oil from their emergency strategic reserves since 1991. Over the next month, the IEA will release 60 million barrels of light, sweet crude oil. The United States will lead the release by providing 30 million barrels of oil to the market. The IEA stated that the release of oil from Read more…
