The Dow Jones Transportation Average jumps 120 points

From Tomi Kilgore: The Dow Jones Transportation Average DJT, +1.24% soared 120 points, or 1.1%, in midday trade, as better-than-expected earnings reports helped the transportation sector tracker buck the weakness in the broader stock market. The Dow transports was led higher by earnings reporters, as shares of railroad operator CSX Corp. CSX, +4.37% shot up 4.6%, airline United Continental Holdings IncUAL, +4.51% rallied 4.3% and Kansas City Southern KSU, +4.16%hiked up 4.0%, after those companies all reported earnings that beat expectations. The stock price gains were adding a combined 73 points to the Dow transports' price. Meanwhile, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.06%shed 52 points, or 0.2%, the S&P 500 SPX, -0.10% gave up 0.3% and the Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.04% slipped 0.2%.

From Steve Goldstein: Shares of Sprint S, -10.15% and T-Mobile US TMUS, -4.86% fell in after-hours trade after The Wall Street Journal reported that Justice Department staffers have told the companies their planned merger is unlikely to be approved as currently structured. The report citing people familiar with the matter as saying the staff members questioned the companies' arguments that the combination would produce important efficiencies for the merged firm. Sprint shares dropped 9% in after-hours action, and T-Mobile shares lost 4%.

Stocks end down on the day after bank earnings disappoint investors

From Sunny Oh: U.S. stocks finished slightly lower on Monday after earnings from Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Citigroup Inc. underwhelmed amid concerns over the banking sector's health. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.10% shed 28 points, or 0.1%, to end around 26,384, based on preliminary numbers. The S&P 500SPX, -0.06% fell by less than 0.1% to end around 2,906. The Nasdaq CompositeCOMP, -0.10% fell 0.1% to finish near 7,976. Though both Goldman Sachs and Citigroup C, +0.03% beat their earnings estimates, their sharp decline in revenues failed to impress investors. Market participants are also looking for any signs of a so-called earnings recession, amid expectations S&P 500 constituent firms could post the first quarterly earnings decline in three years. Shares for Goldman SachsGS, -3.82% were down 3.5%.
