Regulators Finally Urge Caution on Leveraged Funds

So FINRA has finally decided to warn brokers to warn their customers about leveraged ETFs. I covered this subject a long time ago. Back then, I noted that the math will never add up. It can’t. For these funds to work as people expect them beyond a day, the leverage would have to be some multiple of the logarithm of the price change, not a multiple of the percent price change. It’s a subtle difference, but over a period of more than a day, it makes a gigantic impact. FULL STORY

This Town’s Big Enough for Two Infra ETFs

The iShares S&P Emerging Markets Infrastructure Index Fund (EMIF - commentary - Trade Now) began trading Friday on the New York Stock Exchange. EMIF represents iShares' recent grab at the bullish infrastructure market, specifically focusing on larger emerging markets. In fact, about 90% of the fund is contained within a core cluster of seven countries. China represents one-third of EMIF's assets, while Brazil, Argentina and South Korea collectively make up another third. Malaysia, Chile and the Czech Republic account for a majority of the remaining shares, with the last 10% representing a wide variety of smaller emerging countries. FULL STORY

Dual ETF listing

The Taiwan Stock Exchange said it will allow the first dual listing of an exchange-traded fund from Hong Kong by next month. CSI 300 China Tracker, a Hong Kong ETF, may be listed in Taiwan "around July 20," Schive Chi, chairman of the Taiwan bourse, told reporters in Taipei yesterday. Financial stocks recovered a bit on Tuesday after the previous session's drubbing on a bleak global economic forecast, as investors focused on home sales and the upcoming Federal Reserve meeting, with a statement to be issued Wednesday by the regulator.
