ETF Stats for December 2015: Actively Managed ETF Assets Overtake ETNs

new etfsRon Rowland:  Assets in actively managed ETFs climbed 3.3% to $22.9 billion in December, while assets in ETNs dropped 4.5% to $21.5 billion.  This is a significant milestone for actively managed ETFs, marking the first time that their asset levels have surpassed those of ETNs.

Complete List of 101 ETP Closures In 2015

new etfsRon Rowland:  A total of 101 U.S.-listed exchange traded funds (“ETFs”) and exchange traded notes (“ETNs”) had their listings removed in 2015, one shy of the record 102 closures in 2012.  Of the 2,405 U.S. exchange traded products (“ETPs”) launched since 1993, when the industry began, only 1,845 remain, making the lifetime death toll 560 (475 ETFs and 85 ETNs).

ETF Stats for November 2015: Fund-of-Funds Count At 76

statsRon Rowland:  Twenty-one launches and two closures brought the quantity of U.S.-listed exchange traded products to 1,824 (1,623 ETFs and 201 ETNs) at the end of November.  Overall assets climbed 1.0% for the month to $2.14 trillion with actively managed funds garnering a 1.7% increase.

The Alerian MLP (AMLP) ETF Robs Shareholders Again

new etfsRon Rowland:  Twenty-six new ETFs and ETNs came to market in October, and eight closed.  The quantity of products surpassed 1,800 for the first time, and the month-end count stood at 1,805 (1,604 ETFs and 201 ETNs).  Assets surged 7.4% on excellent market gains, although inflows played a role, too.
