futureIan Salisbury from the  online WSJ  reports that "BlackRock Inc.'s (BLK) plan to buy exchange-traded fund powerhouse Barclays Global Investors has prompted speculation the combined entity could dominate the active ETF business. There's one hitch: so far, active ETFs have been a flop."  "It's too early to tell exactly how BlackRock plans to approach ETFs. But it has hardly been shy about highlighting the potential benefits of marrying its expertise as a stock- and bond-picker with Barclays' more hands-off indexing approach," Ian Salisbury Reports.

Pension, hedge funds turn to popular investment vehicle, ETF’s

hedgefund1The Financial Times reports that "Hedge funds are increasingly using ETFs instead of futures and over-the-counter derivatives such as swaps. On the commodities front, they often focus on a single product such as wheat, platinum or palladium through an exchange traded commodity (listed securities backed by a commodity)." It is interesting to see that hedge funds, which some would consider a competing investment vehicle to the ETF, are finding their value within the hedge fund landscape.

More Wind In The Emerging Market Sails? (ETF: FXI)

The theory of "decoupling". Others claimed America’s weakness would effect all parts of the world including emerging markets. Over the past six months the global slump seemed to prove the sceptics right. Emerging economies also stumbled and decoupling was ridiculed.

etfMurry Coleman, writing for Index Universe came out with a story today delving into The Blackrock merger and Retail and institutional investment in ETF's "In the U.S., Fuhr has seen individuals – or retail investors – grow in size and market activity in terms of ETF transactions. Still, she believes institutional investors continue to comprise the majority of ETF business. Now working for BGI, Fuhr estimates that about 60% of all ETF assets are tied to those types of accounts."

Agriculture ETF (DBA) Draws Long-Term Calls Reports "A large trader is making a long-term bet that the agriculture sector will rise by year's end.  A huge block of 7,700 calls changed hands this morning at the January 35 strike of the PowerShares DB Agriculture exchange traded fund, followed by another 300 traded within seconds.  All 8,000 went for $0.70 in a strong buying pattern, according to optionMONSTER's real-time Heat Seeker tracking system,"  Says Mike Yamamoto.

Blackrock’s Purchase of BGI gives results in 2.7 Trillion Total Assets, Larger Than The Federal Reserve

blackrockIt is a bit tough to wrap your head around, but the recent deal reached by Blackrock to buy BGI and its coveted Ishares business for 13.5 billion, makes Blackrock the largest Asset Manager in the world. According to "" the combined 2.7 trillion in assets makes it larger than the Federal Reserve. The scale of this deal combined with other impressive comparisons that can be made in the ETF market, (SPDR GLD being the 6th largest holder of gold for example) are a testament to the explosive growth and attention given to ETF's in the past few years.

Claymore Files Prospectus For Silver Bullion ETF

silver-bars"Investors will soon have a pure play on physical silver bullion, following the filing of a preliminary prospectus by the Claymore Silver Bullion Trust in connection with its initial public offering. The offering price of the Units is $10 with a firm $200 million cap, according to a press release issued today by Claymore Investments Inc. The management fee is 0.6%," Jonathan Chevreau Reports.
